19th Century Occupations - 1880 Census, Occupation Meanings, Reference Guides

Today I was stuck staring at this occupation listed in a marriage index from 1895:

My first thought is that maybe the person taking the info was trying to say "mortomer", like, somehow, maybe?, they were trying to say the person did mortar work?

It got more confusing because any Google search didn't correct it to an actual occupation word, or come up with any good explanation.

I did, however, come across some great resources I would like to save for future reference and share with you!  This one was great because the list is alphabetical, so, like me if you are staring at a word but can make out the first letter, you can start here: Victorian Occupations.

From there, nothing ended in "mer" and I think this person was just really making up their own occupation to describe what my ancestor did for a living.

Some other great resources are here:

10 19th Century Occupations You are Not Likely to See Today

Obscure Old English Census Occupations - This one is cool because it is also alphabetized but may help with location specific research

Hall Genealogy Occupation Names - This one was also just great because it had some unique occupations and was pretty thorough

Any thoughts on the occupation please let me know!  Another reference point has his occupation listed as a "Brass Finisher".
